Details released after crew member fell to his death on Marvel TV series set

The medical examiner has named the 41-year-old

A man has died in a fall while working on the set of Marvel’s TV series Wonder Man.

The 41-year-old had been working as a rigger, when he fell from a catwork and landed on a stage at Radford Studio Center just outside of Los Angeles.

He has been identified as Juan Carlos Osorio, by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner.

A spokesperson from Marvel Studios said: "Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with his family and friends, and our support is behind the investigation into the circumstances of this accident.”

The accident did not occur during filming, but Mr Osorio had been working on the set of the new show, which is set to resume production following the SAG-AFTRA strikes last year.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has launched an investigation into what happened.

Following the death, union International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) released a statement.

IATSE President Matthew D. Loeb said: “Everyone in the IA family is shocked and deeply saddened by this tragic loss. We are working to support our member’s family, and his fellow members and colleagues.

“Safety on set is our highest priority and we will assist Cal/OSHA in their investigation in any way that we can. If you feel unsafe on set for any reason, members can call the IATSE Safety Hotline at 844-422-9273 or use our safety info app.”

Wonder Man stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II and follows Simons Williams.

The Disney+ series centres on Simon Williams (played by Abdul-Mateen II), who is gifted with supernatural talents.

A synopsis reads: “Hollywood actor Simon Williams is thrust into the world of superheroes as he gets powers of his own, and becomes the new superhero Wonder Man.”

A release date is yet to be announced for the 10-episode series, but its likely to land at some point this year.

Thankfully, deaths and serious injuries on movie and TV sets are rare - but there have been a number of high profile incidents in recent years.

In 2021, cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was fatally shot on the set of movie Rust after a prop gun being held by Alec Baldwin went off.

Last month, a New Mexico grand jury decided to indict Baldwin on one count of involuntary manslaughter.

Last year, during filming for the Gladiators sequel in Morocco, several crew members were left with injuries after a stunt sequence went wrong.
