It's one of Netflix's most controversial shows in recent years, and it's back for a third season this Autumn.

We're talking about 13 Reasons Why, the series that dares to tackle all kinds of tough topics, from depression and teen suicide to gun violence and sexual assault.

The news of the release date was announced by actor Zack Prusak, who is credited as 'Jock' in the show.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: "13 Reasons Why season 3. October 2019 ! Let's go !"

Although Netflix is yet to confirm or deny his statement, it would certainly fit in line with previous announcements that the show will return during the latter half of the year.

In other words, you can start getting excited, right... about... now.

The show has done well to get another season, considering its tumultuous past on screen. Many people were unhappy about the graphic depiction of suicide and rape scenes.

However, Netflix has been careful to include warnings before each episode, while the show's core cast continue to campaign and raise awareness around these very real and very significant issues facing teens today.

Speaking about the male rape scene in season two during a Netflix panel last year, creator Brian Yorkey explained the importance of confronting these topics.

He said: "We know that sexual assault is hugely under-reported, sexual assault with male victims is exponentially more under-reported than even sexual assault in general.

"And as a show that had already said we are going to tell the stories of sexual assault victims and survivors, and we're going to tell them in a way that is unflinching and honest, we said, wow, not only does this seem a credible story to be told but in a way we felt there was an imperative to tell it. Because no-one was telling it."

Yorkey went on to quote that one in six men will becoming victims of sexual assault, adding: "That was a story that wasn't being told, it was a story that is happening in high schools today and we felt we not only had the opportunity but the responsibility to tell it."

The second season's narrative dealt with the trial over Hannah Baker's (Katherine Langford) suicide.

It also centres on Clay (Dylan Minnette) as he loses grip with reality and sees hallucinations of Hannah, Bryce (Justin Prentice) and Justin (Brandon Flynn) who were sentenced in a separate trial for raping Jessica (Alisha Boe) and Tyler (Devin Druid) as he was about to commit a mass shooting at his school dance.

The final episode sees Clay, Justin and Jessica standing outside of the school with Dylan's character holding the assault rife that Tyler was going to use in his attack.

It will be interesting to see how season three will deal with the fallout of these events, and thankfully we don't have to wait long to find out. October, people - get it in the diary.
