Throughout his illustrious career Alan Rickman played some of the most iconic villains in cinema history, from Hans Gruber in Die Hard to the Sheriff of Nottingham, in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.

But there is one character that the actor - who was once voted the best of all time - will perhaps be best known and best-loved for by fans the world over, that of the troubled and complicated Professor Severus Snape, a part he played in all eight Harry Potter films.

After wrapping up on the final installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, in 2011, the star wrote an emotional goodbye letter to the films which took over such an immense part of his and their fans' lives.

The letter reads: "I have just returned from the dubbing studio where I spoke into a microphone as Severus Snape for absolutely the last time. On the screen were some flashback shots of Daniel, Emma, and Rupert from ten years ago.

The actor said goodbye to the films and fans in an emotional letter.

"They were 12. I have also recently returned from New York, and while I was there, I saw Daniel singing and dancing (brilliantly) on Broadway. A lifetime seems to have passed in minutes.

"Three children have become adults since a phone call with Jo Rowling, containing one small clue, persuaded me that there was more to Snape than an unchanging costume, and that even though only three of the books were out at that time, she held the entire massive but delicate narrative in the surest of hands.

"It is an ancient need to be told in stories. But the story needs a great storyteller. Thanks for all of it, Jo.

It's been three years since the actor tragically passed away following his battle with cancer, and though some time has passed since then, the impact his performances have had on audiences will never be forgotten.

And fans of the great actor have taken to social media to mark this special anniversary.

One fan wrote: "14 January 2016: Alan Rickman, who portrayed Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films, passed away at the age of 69. You will always be our Professor Snape."

"Raise your wands for Alan Rickman. RIP," wrote another.
