Well, fucking hell. That was intense. There's no other way to describe it.

The third episode of the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones has just gone out, and it's probably the biggest episode of anything in TV history.

The Battle of Winterfell took its toll on everyone. One side lost a whole Dothraki horde, the other lost an ice dragon, and in the end, the Night King was no more.

That's right, tiny wee Arya Stark - the teenager trained to become a faceless man - managed to pull off some quick-witted knife work and shiv the Night King right into the chest.

In the ultimate battle between good and evil, good managed to triumph with a surprise uppercut knockout in the twelfth round.

In fact, boxing analogies are a bit redundant given that any trainer worth their salt would have long since chucked the towel in.

It had been long speculated that Arya might be the one to kill the Night King in the end, but then so much shit has been thrown at that particular wall by now that something was bound to stick.

However, if you look far enough back, it should come as no surprise to anyone that it would be the youngest Stark girl to eventually wield the axe. Of course, we didn't know it at the time, but Melisandre (RIP, btw) basically told us this in season three.

RIP Night King, we hardly knew ye.

Remember when the Red Woman arrived to buy Gendry from the Brotherhood Without Banners? She looked deep into Arya's eyes and told her she saw death in them.

"I see a darkness in you," she told her. "And in that darkness, eyes staring back at me: brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes. Eyes you'll shut forever. We will meet again."

There you go.

The prophecy came true.

Who famously has blue eyes that needed shutting forever? Only your boy the Night King.

There's another scene in season seven in which Melisandre speaks to Daenerys Targaryen about 'Azor Ahai' or 'The Prince That Was Promised'.

It's an old prophecy about someone who will show up to banish darkness and kill the Night King. Missandei reminds her that in the original language, it's not a gender specific term.

Prince, or Princess That Was Promised.

Now we've got our answer. Does this mean that Gendry and Arya are now the favourites to take the throne? Uniting both their houses, Baratheon and Stark?

Azor Ahai? Why not?

What do you reckon is going to happen? How do you even consider that after watching that?

The final season of Game of Thrones continues on Sky Atlantic at 2am on Monday 6 May, before repeating at 9pm that same day.
