'Watchmen' Fans, Get Excited: HBO Confirm TV Series Is Definitely Happening

Work has already started on the project

HBO has given us many a TV box set to binge on in recent years, not least of all Game Of Thrones. Now the American broadcasting giant is planning to bring yet another potential smash to our screens.

Their next project in the pipeline is a brand new take on Alan Moore's acclaimed graphic novel, Watchmen.

The original comics, which ran from 1986-97, were turned into a movie in 2009, directed by Zack Snyder and starring Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Goode and Carla Gugino in a ensemble cast.

However, fans criticised the film for changing the dramatic conclusion of the comics, with many suggesting a longer TV format would better suit the lengthy storyline.

None of the film's cast are likely to return for the TV series, with Damon Lindelof expected to produce the show - which will be as critically scrutinised, undoubtedly, as the film.

Lindelof has also recently created - and was a showrunner for - HBO's The Leftovers.

He announced his role with the show in Instagram, where he pricked people's ears (or rather opened their eyes) by showing off a trophy.

Not just any old trophy though - a replica of the one given to Watchmen character Night Owl in his retirement, as per the original comics.

Night Owl was the World War II vigilante who wrote a memoir that appeared in the back pages of the graphic novel.

If you want a brief description as to what the comics are all about, then here is a description of what to expect, as given on the DC Comic's website: "It all begins with the paranoid delusions of a half-insane hero called Rorschach.

"But is Rorschach really insane or has he in fact uncovered a plot to murder super-heroes and, even worse, millions of innocent civilians?

"On the run from the law, Rorschach reunites with his former teammates in a desperate attempt to save the world and their lives, but what they uncover will shock them to their very core and change the face of the planet!

"Following two generations of masked superheroes from the close of World War II to the icy shadow of the Cold War comes this groundbreaking comic story - the story of The Watchmen."

When the film was released in March 2009, it had an initial bumper weekend at the box office, however after its first seven days, attendances dropped off - the overall 67.7 percent decrease is one of the highest for a major comic book film.

On Rotten Tomatoes, Watchmen currently has a 65% approval rating based on 294 reviews and an average rating of 6.3/10.

The site's critical consensus reads, "Gritty and visually striking, Watchmen is a faithful adaptation of Alan Moore's graphic novel, but its complex narrative structure may make it difficult for it to appeal to viewers not already familiar with the source material."

Maybe (hopefully) Lindelof can create something much more appealing.
