‘Sabrina The Teenage Witch’ Will Return As A Dark, Coming-Of-Age TV Show

But it won't be ready for at least another 12 months.

Sabrina the Teenage Witch was an easy to watch, funny 90s TV show that followed Sabrina as she juggled her magic powers with the daily struggles of being in high school.

There were 163 episodes spread across seven glorious seasons, along with three TV movies, before we had to bid farewell to Sabrina, Zelda, Hilda, Harvey and, of course, Salem.

The show was based off the Archie Comics which were first published in 1971. That magazine empire has grown in popularity since the debut of the TV series Riverdale, which follows the main characters from the comics (Archie, Betty Cooper etc).

Because of its raging success, TV bosses have been looking at other characters within the Archie universe to see whether they could be turned into spin-off shows.

There have been hundreds of Sabrina the Teenage Witch comics released, however The CW, Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions has decided to focus on one series that was released in 2014.

Titled Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, it's a much darker version of the Sabrina that most grew to love on the TV. It appears that in this arc, a former flame of Sabrina's dad, aptly named Madam Satan, has 'returned from Hell and wants revenge on the Spellman family'.

News of the reboot has excited the fans all over the world.

But if TV bosses want to stick to the script laid out in the comics, then there might be some Game of Thrones level incest layered into the show. In the original TV series, Sabrina dates a boy called Harvey for four seasons and the couple reunites for the finale episode after finding out they're soul mates.

In the comic book, Harvey is killed by the witch council, but is later revived with Sabrina's dad's soul trapped in his body, without the teenage witch knowing. So she'd be technically getting with her dad.

However, Comics Alliance called the series: "A pretty incredible accomplishment. In a time when we're getting some fantastic horror comics on the stands, Sabrina might just be the best of the bunch."

The pilot will be directed by Lee Toland Krieger and written by Archie Comics CFO, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who has also worked on Marvel comics, Glee, Big Love and Riverdale. It's slated for release during the 2018-19 TV season.

Aguirre-Sacasa told The Hollywood Reporter: "One of the nice things about me being a part of Archie Comics is having access to a library of 4,000-5,000 characters. Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Josie and the Pussycats ... those are characters who can very easily support their own show. But we [also] have superheroes. So in success, yes, the goal is to expand that way."

They have a lot to live up to considering the original series had just a massive cult following; we'll have to wait and see.
