Fans are getting very excited at the idea of a third instalment to what they claim is one of the best crime dramas in TV history. The first season of True Detective got an audience score on Rotten Tomatoes near 100 percent, however the second wasn't as well received.

But everyone is hoping the third will get back to that epic goodness that sucked in fans at the start.

Those dedicated viewers have been given a pretty good indication that it's heading in that direction, with the two lead characters being cast.

Mahershala Ali will be the lead male and considering he won an Academy Award for the critically acclaimed Moonlight, there's no doubt he will bring some serious acting skills to the table. His co-star has been announced as Carmen Ejogo, who has appeared in a raft of films, including Selma, The Purge: Anarchy, Alien: Covenant and Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.

They have some pretty big shoes to fill as Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson starred in the first, followed by Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn.

However, the news of the casting sent some pretty happy shockwaves through social media.

It's also been revealed that season three will be set in the Ozarks in Arkansas and will take place over three different time periods. That's in the same vein as the first season where McConaughey and Harrelson investigated a horrific murder over the course of 17 years.

But there had been some doubt over whether fans would even get a third season, with HBO head of programming Casey Bloys saying last year: "It is not dead. I talked to Nic [Pizzolatto] about it and both Nic and HBO are open to another season. I don't think Nic has a take and he's working on some other projects.

"We're open to somebody else writing it and Nic supervising it. It's a valuable franchise, it's not dead, we just don't have a take for a third season yet."

Writer and director Nic Pizzolatto has written more than half of the episodes if it sticks to the usual eight chapters seen in the last two seasons. He's told Deadline: "I'm tremendously thrilled to be working with artists at the level of Mahershala and Jeremy. I hope the material can do justice to their talents, and we're all very excited to tell this story."

Mahershala will play Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas while Ejogo stars as Amelia Reardon, an Arkansas schoolteacher with a connection to two missing children in 1980.
