He went into cardiac arrest and died surrounded by his family.
Reynolds was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor following his role as porn director Jack Horner in Boogie Nights, which was released in 1997.
In his 2015 memoir But Enough About Me, he said: "I didn't open myself to new writers or risky parts because I wasn't interested in challenging myself as an actor. I was interested in having a good time.
"As a result, I missed a lot of opportunities to show I could play serious roles. By the time I finally woke up and tried to get it right, nobody would give me a chance."

One of the 'opportunities' he could have been referring to is Die Hard - he was allegedly turned down from playing the part of John McClane.
But one thing he gave himself credit for was Deliverance, writing: "I don't know if it's the best acting I've done, but it's the best movie I've ever been in. It proved I could act, not only to the public but me."
The star famously posed naked for Cosmopolitan magazine on a bearskin rug, something which he later revealed that he regretted.

During an interview with AOL's What To Watch, he said: "It was really stupid. I don't know what I was thinking. I really wish I hadn't done that."
