The countdown is well and truly on for the biggest movie of the year, Avengers: Endgame, which will hit cinemas in the UK later tonight.

But it's not just an emotional time for fans of the superhero saga - even Captain America himself has revealed how he cried at the ending of the long-awaited film.

Actor Chris Evans took to the stage at the Los Angeles Convention Center, at the premiere of the Marvel flick, and according to Variety he admitted he got a little teary towards the end.

Referencing his fellow cast members, he said: "I have a lot of my friends and family here tonight, and a lot of them are right up here.

"We have this bond that transcends what we do for a living... I cried like six times [tonight]."

And wasn't alone - Chris Hemsworth (Thor) grabbed hold of the mic after Cap's speech and said he'd probably cried more than six times after watching it.

Alright, Hemsworth, it's not a competition.

Mark Ruffalo (Bruce Banner/Hulk) then warned that fans would actually 'grieve' after seeing it.

And by the looks of the early reviews, he's not wrong, with journos who have been lucky enough to see early screenings calling it a 'masterful epic' which will take fans on an three-hour rollercoaster of emotion.

But it's not all tears - Erik Davis, managing editor at Fandango, said he also laughed.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote: "Avengers: Endgame is a masterful epic - a true culmination of 22 films that not only concludes the story, but expands upon it. You'll learn more about the other movies while this one unfolds. If Infinity War is the brawn, Endgame is the brains. And wow, what an ending!

"Do not go in expecting Infinity War part two. The two films are so different, yet complement each other in all the best ways. In terms of which MCU movie to watch beforehand... honestly, all of them. What an experience - what an accomplishment.

Captain America admitted her couldn't hold back the tears at the new film.

"Not going to spoil anything at all, but I will say I laughed, I cried, I cried, I cheered, I laughed, I cried again and then the entire audience gave it a massive standing ovation. And then I cried again. Be ready, kids. Be. Ready."

One little fan who definitely enjoyed the movie was Felipe Andres Muyshondt, who is currently battling cancer and was personally invited to the premiere by the Captain America actor.

In a video message sent to the brave lad - known as Pipe - Chris Evans said: "I just read all about you and I just had to let you know that I think you are so strong and so brave, and I am so impressed. You could definitely, definitely fight with us on the Avengers."

Avengers: Endgame lands in cinemas from midnight tonight (24 April).
