In the first season of surprise hit The Sinner, Jessica Biel starred as Cora Tannetti, a mother and wife who was raised in an incredibly religious family. Tannetti commits a murder for what appears to be no reason, and the whole storyline unfolds to attempt to work out what would possess her to do such a thing.

However, along with the news that there would be a second season also came the announcement that Biel probably wouldn't feature.

Those rumours were true, as it's now been revealed that for series two, our new protagonist will be Fargo and Avengers: Infinity War actress Carrie Coon.

She'll be playing a mysterious character called Vera, who is described as a 'formidable, mysterious woman who struggles between upholding the ideals of the community she leads and fulfilling her own desires'.

Natalie Paul will also play detective-in-training Heather, while Hannah Gross will star as Marin, Heather's childhood pal.

Bill Pullman's also going to be back, reprising his role of Detective Harry Ambrose.

A synopsis for the season explains what to expect, saying: "In the wake of the Cora Tannetti case, Detective Harry Ambrose is called back to his hometown in distant rural New York to assess a disturbing new crime: an 11-year-old boy's horrific double-homicide & his seemingly inexplicable motive.

"As Ambrose comes to realise there's nothing ordinary about the boy or where he came from, his investigation leads him straight into the hidden darkness of his hometown and pitting him against those who'll stop at nothing to protect its secrets."

Jessica Biel won't be completely missing, though, as Variety reports she'll be returning as an executive producer for the second season, along with her Iron Ocean partner Michelle Purple.

Derek Simonds will once again serve as showrunner, and will also executive produce.

Critics went absolutely wild for the first season. It's got a rating of 94 percent fresh on Rotten Tomatoes and critic Brian Tallerico wrote on review website Roger Ebert: "I'm totally hooked on USA's The Sinner, the excellent adaptation of Petra Hammesfahr's mystery novel starring Jessica Biel, Christopher Abbott, and Bill Pullman, directed by Christine director Antonio Campos.

"At the beginning of every summer, outlets like Entertainment Weekly try to offer a selection of books that fall under the often-escapist banner of 'Beach Reads'.

"You know the kind of book they mean - something you buy in an airport gift shop and leave in the cabana before you head back to reality.

"They're often critically derided but harder to pull off successfully than they're given credit for. They require a delicate balance of plot and character, with twists that keep the pages turning and people you want to find out more about."

Even if we get a fraction of the greatness that the first season brought, we'll still be in for a treat. Here's hoping, eh?
