Catelyn Stark Might Have Predicted Jon Snow's Fate In Season One

Catelyn Stark Might Have Predicted Jon Snow's Fate In Season One

Spooky, if true...

Whatever will we all argue about now that Game of Thrones is finished, eh? Over the past eight seasons it has provided countless shocking moments, talking points, and - now - the most controversial ending that we could have hoped for.

Sure, it wasn't the ending that some people were hoping for, but it certainly got people talking.

As ever, the theories have been flying about thick and fast since the show finished. Everything is up for scrutiny, including things that happened in the very first series.

That's where this theory comes in. It looks like Jon Snow's entire character arc could have been predicted all the way back in series one by his adoptive mother, Lady Catelyn Stark.

Now, the pair never got on when they were both alive and together. In fact, Jon went to the wall basically because Catelyn hated him. However, Lady Stark told a story back at the very beginning about how Jon got ill when he was a baby and she made a few promises to the gods.

That's where this theory begins.

Let's let Reddit user Animation_Bat1 take it from here: "Catelyn Stark said she prayed to the gods to 'take him away' and 'make him die'.

"She said that when Jon Snow came down with the pox, Maester Luwin said that if he made it through the night he'd live, but it would be a very 'long night'.

"At this point she regretted that she had condemned him to death, so she prayed to all seven gods to 'let him live' through the long night and she would 'beg her husband to give him a true name.'

"He lived through the night, but she said she couldn't keep her promise."

Think about it - 'take him away' means Jon heading to the wall. He did make it through a very long night.

The Long Night as it happens.

Oh, and he did die as well. Getting that true name? For sure, he did that too.

Not a Stark name, though. He's Aegon Targaryen.

Anyway, Reddit users have praised Animation_Bat1's 'solid reasoning' but even the most avowed fan would have to admit, it's unlikely.

After all, the later series were made without George RR Martin's books to work from. That means that it's unlikely that this actually means anything.

Unless the writers are actually a lot smarter than they're getting credit for...
