Just like they are in character, Brooklyn Nine-Nine actors, Chelsea Peretti and Andy Samberg are in fact childhood friends and now their on-screen chemistry makes complete sense.

And we discovered this snap of the mates back in 6th grade looking all youthful and rejuvenated.

People found the entire thing adorable and there were some cracking ideas off the back of the picture including working it into the show somehow.

One fan said: "I'm so happy they are actually close friends IRL."

"They should work this photo some way into the show, and bring back an episode where it's just Jake and Gina reminiscing their childhood," another suggested.

Which would be a bloody great idea, especially given Peretti's departure announcement.

A third added: "They actually have mentioned how they are longtime friends on the show.

"I'd love to see some family nostalgia at the wedding."

Peretti has been completely honest about her childhood crush on Samberg, when she spoke to Conan O'Brien on TBS.

She explained: "We went to elementary school... I had a huge crush on Andy and he for some reason will never acknowledge this, when I bring it up he just dead-eyes me.

"I used to call his house on like those old-timey phones that we used to have. I would call and hang up, call and hang up as some young girls do. Irritating young girls."

Bet his family loved her for that.

She continued: "I don't know what my end game was really, I didn't have a plan, there was no emojis then, that would have made it so easy you know, to flirt with him."

Announcing her departure from the show on Twitter, Peretti said: "I won't be doing a full season of Brooklyn Nine Nine in Season 6. But that doesn't mean I won't ever be back, winky face emoji, heart emoji.

"I want to thank you for the hours you spent watching Gina be Gina: confident, idiotic-but-smart, pithy, and infused with rhythm and cell-phone radiation. It is hard for me to know exactly what to say."

Peretti, 40, has been a regular on the series from the very beginning, filming a total of 112 episodes.

The show's co-creator, Dan Goor said in a statement on Twitter: "From the moment Mike Schur and I decided to create this show, we wanted Chelsea Peretti be a part of it, and she always will be.

"While it's sad to see a member of the family leave, we are so proud of Chelsea and excited for what she does next. Also, I know for a fact this isn't the last we'll see of Gina Linetti."

Fingers crossed emoji.
