Claire Foy has come to Adam Sandler's defence after he was criticised for placing his hand on her knee during a recent appearance on The Graham Norton Show.

Fans hit out at 51-year-old Sandler when he placed his hand on 33-year-old Foy's knee, claiming she looked 'uncomfortable' and he was acting 'inappropriately'. Judge for yourself here:

To many viewers it appeared that an oblivious Adam failed to realise her discomfort at what he was doing. Claire eventually responded by moving his hand back to his own leg.

Here's what people had to say about his actions on Twitter:

But now a representative for Foy told Metro.co.uk: "We don't believe anything was meant by Adam's gesture and no offence was caused to Claire."

Reps for Adam Sandler added that: "This is completely ridiculous. It was a friendly gesture," commenting that Adam acted in a similar way with Dustin Hoffman during a recent interview in the US.

A number of big names in Hollywood, including Harvey Weinstein and director James Tobak, have been accused of sexual assault by women over the past month.

In light of the Harvey Weinstein case, thousands of women - and men - have used the #MeToo hashtag to emphasise how common, and, in many ways, how accepted, sexual assault is.
