If you go on Mastermind, you've got to be sure you know your subject inside out. Or at least have a bit of general knowledge under your belt - like oh, I don't know, the difference between a city and a country.

But alas, for former England spinner Monty Panesar, he truly delivered one of the most pitiful performances in the entire history of the show.

Taking to the hot seat for an episode of Celebrity Mastermind on Friday night, the cricketer made a number of palm-to-face gaffes - including one where he got a question wrong in which the answer involved his own name. Yep, we're talking about that level of error.

As you can see by the video, it wasn't exactly going to plan by the time 36-year-old Monty answered 'The Dreamboys' to the question: "In what 1997 film do a group of Sheffield men become strippers for a night at their local working men's club?"

You've probably figured out by now that the real answer is, of course, The Full Monty. But that's cool, what's one little blunder, right? The dude was under pressure after all.

Monty Panesar had a go, to be fair.

Unfortunately that doesn't explain the answer he gave when asked for the city where the German football team played its home internationals until 2001.

You'd think, what with it being a German team, they might just play their home games in their own country. But nope! He went ahead and said 'Athens', the capital city of Greece. Eh?

Next up, when questioned over the title of the book in CS Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia Chronicles of Narnia that follows The Magician's Nephew - and fair play, the answer to this one might not leap out, although you could have a guess - Monty offered perhaps his most baffling answer of all... 'CJ Lewis'.

Not quite mate - the answer's actually The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Not far off...

By this point you can see the poor guy's starting to feel the pressure as he realises the weight of his mistakes. He passes the next two questions, only to more or less give up when he's asked what season poet Keats described as 'a season of mists and mellow fruitfulness'.

Rather than hazarding a guess (ya know, since there are only four seasons), Monty gives his most surreal answer of all: 'Oliver Twist'.

And the final dagger to the heart, when asked which CITY Cheers is set in, he simply remarks 'America'. Oh, Monty - you've got to feel for the guy!

As you'd expect from such a terrible run, the poor guy's currently getting absolutely roasted by the Twitter community.
