Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has been announced as Forbes highest paid actor of the year, pulling in an eye-watering $124 million (£93.4m).

The wrestler-turned-actor took to social media to share the happy news in a typically humble post.

And fair play to him, he does put in the hours - last year alone he starred in The Fate of the Furious, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Baywatch as well as voice over work. This year, Rampage and Skyscraper have already hit cinemas and then there's his hit HBO show Ballers, which has a fourth season about to drop in a few weeks.

Meanwhile, outside of work, his other-half has not long given birth to their second daughter (his third) and that's not to mention the amount of time he must spend in the gym. Busy fella.

This isn't the first time he's found himself topping the list of highest paid actors, Forbes placed him at the number one spot in 2016, but last year he found himself in second place behind Mark Whalberg.

Forbes, which looked at the year from 1 June 2017 to 1 June 2018, credits Johnson's social media presence with helping to boost his popularity - and therefore income.

Speaking to Forbes, Johnson shows he is as shrewd as he is likeable, telling the publication: "Social media has become the most critical element of marketing a movie for me.

"I have established a social media equity with an audience around the world that there's a value in what I'm delivering to them."

The 46-year-old's acting earnings are actually less than Hollywood star George Clooney's - however, Clooney never stared in any films this year, with the majority of his earnings coming from the sale of his tequila company Casamigos. He's also made a couple of Nespresso adverts. Nice work if you can get it.

Johnson's acting-related earnings are the highest ever recorded by Forbes and are almost twice the $65 million/£49.3m he earned last year, so he still has plenty to celebrate.

Elsewhere on its 20th annual Celebrity 100, Forbes revealed the other top five highest earning entertainers.

Topping the list was boxer Floyd Mayweather ($285 million/£215m), followed by actor George Clooney ($239 million/£180m), reality-star Kylie Jenner ($166.5 million/£125.5m), and, bizarrely, telly-shouty-woman Judge Judy Sheindlin, who had pretax earnings of $147 million/£110m, meaning she actually brought in $23 million/£17.4m more than The Rock.
