Everything Sucks: Netflix's New 90s Nostalgia Trip Has Everyone Excited

Everything Sucks, Netflix's new show about the 90s, is set to do for the decade of Friends what Stranger Things did for the 80s

Everything Sucks!, a new comedy from the streaming service, looks back to 1996, a year when Take That split up (the first time), the Spice Girls' debut single, Wannabe, was released and John Major was (just about) Prime Minister. It was also the year Braveheart won Best Picture, Tiger Woods made his professional debut and the Chicago Bulls won the NBA Championship.

Set in Oregon, Ameri-cay, Everything Sucks! is a Ben York Jones-created show which takes place in a town called Boring, which actually exists, and was almost certainly chosen on purpose to evoke the feeling that nothing ever happens when you're a teenager.

It centres on two high school groups (the A/V club and the drama club) who join forces to make a movie about the seemingly never-ending nightmare that is high school.

The trailer draws a number of parallels between then and now, such as the prevalence of portable CD players, iron-on badges, Tipex and the reality that the closest you could come to internet pornography back then was to write 'Boobs' upside down on a calculator. Good times.

Everything Sucks! is set in the 1990s.

Speaking to Variety, Jones emphasised that although the show will be set in the 90s - with all the references that entails - its themes are relevant to the world of 2018.

"The 90s aspect is surface. It's music, Tamagotchis, it's snap bracelets, yes, but ultimately the show is about our characters and their interpersonal relationships," Jones said. "Human emotions haven't changed over time, emotions are the same."

The Everything Sucks! cast was told to watch various coming-of-age movies prior to filming, and had to listen to 90s music such as Oasis classic 'Wonderwall' as they prepared to reimagine the decade of Friends, MSN messenger, Bill Clinton, Zinedine Zidane's two goals against Brazil, Nan's house, pop tarts, Biker Mice From Mars and -

Sorry, wait, what was I doing? Got lost in a little nostalgia-laden rabbit hole there.

Oh, yeah, the 90s.

The show starts streaming on Netflix on 16 February and Gina G, Byker Grove, Jurassic Park but not The Lost World, Manchester United, Pulp, Blur, DVDs, Mario Kart, text messaging, New Labour, Nokia, Tickle Me Elmo, MP3s, the world wide web and that weird paper clip who used to fuck you off on your computer screen with unhelpful suggestions.

It's going to be good.
