Ahead of the release of MINDHUNTER's long-awaited second season in August, Netflix has given us an exciting batch of first look images to pore over - basically the equivalent of a bowl of peanuts to nibble on before dinner's ready, and we are here for it.

Based on true crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI's Serial Crime Unit, the crime thriller series proved to be a huge hit with viewers when its first series dropped at the end of 2017.

Since then, we've been waiting patiently for our next fix of our mind-hunting crack team - FBI agents Holden Ford (Jonathan Groff) and Bill Tench (Holt McCallany) and psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv) - having been drip-fed information like its 16 August release date and plot details.

While season one saw the team focus on interviewing imprisoned serial killers to try and make sense of why they did what they did, for round two things fast forward two years to hone in on the Atlanta child murders of 1979-1981.

The first look pictures confirm not only the Atlanta setting, but also that we'll be dealing with the chilling subject of child killings.

The official synopsis for MINDHUNTER season two reads: "FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench probe further into the psyches of those who have done the unthinkable. With help from psychologist Wendy Carr, they apply their groundbreaking behavioral analysis to hunting notorious serial killers."

It's also interesting to spot that Cameron Britton will be back as chilling serial killer Ed Kemper, who was interviewed by Ford and Tench back in the first series, while there's also all those rumours about a certain Charles Manson cropping up...

Along with David Fincher, directors this season also include Andrew Dominik (The Assassination of Jesse James) and Carl Franklin (Devil in a Blue Dress).

There'll be nine episodes this time, compared to the first season's 10 - but that should be plenty to keep you happy for the time-being.

Confirming that we'd be getting our second series mid-August while speaking on the KCRW's The Treatment podcast, executive producer David Fincher discussed the programme's approach to depicting serial killers, and how it differs from the likes of Se7en, which he directed.

"We really wanted to drive a stake through the heart of the idea of the serial killer as this glorified comic book super villain," he said of the show.

Charlize Theron, who is another of the show's executive producers, also referred to the forthcoming season as 'deep', 'dark' and 'wonderful' when she appeared on SiriusXM's Howard Stern Show earlier this year - which sound like three words we can all get on board with.

MINDHUNTER will be released on Netflix on 16 August.
