The first trailer has been released for the much-anticipated Laurel and Hardy biopic, Stan & Ollie - and it looks as though there's going to be a lot more to it than simply pies in faces and boots up arses.

The pair garnered worldwide fame for their one-liners and mastery of slapstick humour, with Cumbria-born Stan Laurel invariably playing the role of the smilingly oblivious buffoon, to Oliver Hardy's quick-tempered schemer.

The forthcoming film, which stars Steve Coogan as Laurel and John C. Reilly as Hardy, is based on the world famous double act's rollercoaster final tour of the UK in 1953.

Despite the immense popularity of the duo, who starred in more than 100 films together, the writer of Stan & Ollie, Jeff Pope, said he was keen to ensure this film presents a warts-and-all account of the pair.

According to the Telegraph, he said: "I am aware of the huge responsibility of bringing their characters to life, but I have not treated the boys with kid gloves or looked at them through rose-coloured specs.

"They are living and breathing characters, with flaws and shortcomings. The research into this story threw up so many details and facts that I had no idea about.

"But everything I have done has come from a place of love and more than anything else I hope this shines through."

Pope previously worked with Coogan on the screenplay for 2013 comedy-drama Philomena, which received an Oscar nomination. Coogan is undoubtedly best known in the UK for comedy character Alan Partridge, while Reilly is perhaps most famous for his role in the movie Stepbrothers, as well as Talladega Nights and Wreck It Ralph.

The synopsis for Stan & Ollie reads: "The true story of Hollywood's greatest comedy double act, Laurel and Hardy, is brought to the big screen for the first time. Starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly as the inimitable movie icons, Stan & Ollie is the heart-warming story of what would become the pair's triumphant farewell tour.

"With their golden era long behind them, the pair embark on a variety hall tour of Britain and Ireland. Despite the pressures of a hectic schedule, and with the support of their wives Lucille (Shirley Henderson) and Ida (Nina Arianda) - a formidable double act in their own right - the pair's love of performing, as well as for each other, endures as they secure their place in the hearts of their adoring public."

The film will be released in UK cinemas on 11 January 2019.
