Since it aired earlier this week, episode five of Game of Thrones' final season has come in for a fair bit of criticism - it even ranks as the show's worst ever episode on Rotten Tomatoes.

Fans have been lining up to pick holes in the 80-minute bloodbath, with many disappointed at Daenerys Targaryen's quick transformation into the 'Mad Queen'.

For many years she had been the beacon of hope - she freed slaves, for God's sake. She was meant to be one of the good guys.

However, after defeating Cersei Lannister's army and forcing them to surrender, she then totally lost the plot and spent the next 30 minutes of the episode destroying everyone and everything in King's Landing.

And she didn't even kill Cersei when she got the chance...!

One upset fan wrote: "The writers of making Daenerys go mad Queen was so confusing to watch."

Another added: "Mad Queen is a Misogynistic Mess."

Fans have questioned why Dany chose to destroy King's Landing and allow Cersei to escape.

Well, the show's creators David Benioff and D. B. Weiss have now explained their reasoning behind Dany's fall from grace - apparently, it shouldn't really come as much of a surprise.

In a special behind-the-scenes film, Benioff said: "She chose violence. A Targaryen choosing violence is a pretty terrifying thing.

"Even when you look back to season one and Khal Drogo gives the golden crown to Viserys, her reaction to watching her brother's head melted off. There is something chilling about the way Dany has responded to the death of her enemies.

"And if circumstances would have been different, I don't think this side of Dany would ever have come out - if Cersei hadn't betrayed her, if she hadn't killed Missandei, if Jon hadn't told her the truth... If all these things had happened in a different way, I don't think we would see this side of Daenerys Targaryen."

Weiss added: "I don't think she decided ahead of time that she was going to do what she did. She sees the Red Keep, which is to her the home that her family built when they first came over to this country 300 years ago.

"It's in that moment, on the walls of King's Landing, when she's looking at that symbol of everything that was taken from her, that she takes the decision to make this personal."

And if you've been wondering why Dany didn't really appear very much after she went rogue and burned most of King's Landing to a crisp, well, Weiss has got an explanation for that as well.

"We wanted her to be just death from above," he said. "As seen from the perspective of the people who are on the business end of that dragon."

"In most large stories like this, it seems like there's a tendency to focus on the heroic figures and not pay much attention to the people who may be suffering the repercussions of the decisions made by those heroic people."

What do you think? Has that changed your mind about episode five? Or do you still think it was a load of tosh? Come tell us your side of the story at Game of Thrones: Westeros Posting on Facebook.
