Gavin & Stacey is to return to screens in the UK for a Christmas special at the end of 2019.

The news was announced by James Corden on his Twitter. Corden posted a picture of the script, written by himself and Ruth Jones, and said: "Ruth Jones and I have been keeping this secret for a while... We're excited to share it with you. See you on Christmas Day."

The BBC, which broadcast the original show and will air this special on Christmas Day, put out a press release in which Corden and Jones are quoted as having said: "Over the last ten years we've talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey - where they might be today and what their lives might look like.

"And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one hour special. We've loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy. We're so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen."

It looks as if all of our favourite characters from the original series - which ran for three seasons between 2007 and 2010 - will be up for returning for this one-off special as well.

The BBC announced that Matthew Horne and Joanna Page will (obviously) be back as the title characters.

Corden and Jones are back too, naturally.

They also said that Rob Brydon, Larry Lamb, Melanie Waters, and Alison Steadman are to return.

That's pretty much a full house.

The show - in case you've forgotten - tells the story of Gavin, a lad from Essex, and his relationship with Stacey from Wales.

Obviously, hilarity ensues...

Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, added: "Everyone at the BBC is hugely excited to be welcoming back Gavin and Stacey to BBC One this Christmas. We can't wait to see what's happened to everyone over the last nine years, and what's next for one of the nation's favourite comedy families."

The sitcom enjoyed huge success throughout the original run, during which they also produced several special episodes for Christmas.

When the show concluded on New Year's Day 2010 it managed to attract a record 10.25m viewers on BBC One.

Let's hope that they return on Christmas Day with more of the same.
