George R. R. Martin Reveals There Could Have Been 13 Seasons of 'Game Of Thrones'

The long-running series is set to end next year, but there could've been more of Jon Snow to see

All Game of Thrones fans will be experiencing bittersweet emotions at the minute - the countdown is on until the next series (mid 2019, not too long to wait!), but it is, unfortunately, the show's last ever season.

But while we were all just keeping watch for the white crow - a true sign winter is coming, after all - novelist and GOT creator George R. R. Martin dropped a huge bombshell at the Emmys last night, revealing that instead of only eight seasons, they could've made 12 or 13.

Wait, what?

That's right, according the man who made dragons and fantasy epics cool again, there was enough content to continue the series for much longer.

On the red carpet, Variety asked Martin why Game of Thrones is ending, but he simply deferred the question to the show's producers.

"I don't know, ask David [Benioff] and Dan [Weiss] when they come through," he said.

"We could have gone to 11, 12, 13 seasons. But I guess they wanted a life."

They wanted a life? Thanks Dan and David, I wanted a life filled with more Kit Harrington smoldering from Winterfell!

Pointing out certain that certain cuts were made during development, Martin added: "If you've read my novels, you know there was enough material for more seasons.

"David and Dan have been saying for five years that seven seasons was all they would go. We got them to go to eight but not any more than that."

"There was a period five years ago where they were saying seven seasons and I was saying 10, and they won."

Come on David and Dan - the man created the story, let him have what he wants.

Audiences can still expect more from the world of Westeros, however.

Martin said: "We have five prequels in development that are based on other periods of Westeros.

"Some of them just 100 years before Game of Thrones, some of them 5000 years before Game of Thrones."

Earlier this year, it was rumoured we'd see our next dose of Jon Snow by April 2019, but a rep from HBO told Huffpost an airdate for Game Of Thrones hasn't actually been announced - gutted. So, it's probably best not to hold your breath waiting for it.

Devastatingly, fans of the show have been without a new episode for almost a whole year.

HBO's president of programming, Casey Bloys, said the show would be premiering in the first half of 2019.

This means the show will qualify for the Emmy Awards next year - a series must air between 1 June 2018 and 31 May 2019 to be eligible.

So, if HBO wanted the final season of Game Of Thrones to be considered in the next Emmys, GOT would have to air before the end of May.

Though our night's watch for April may have ended, we can still get excited that dates are narrowing down - even if only very slightly.
