'Gotti' Trailer Suggests It Could Be An Instant Gangster Movie Classic

The new trailer for Gotti has been released, and if that's anything to go by, it looks like the film could be an instant classic.

Since the dawn of cinema, we've been blessed with some absolute masterpieces when it comes to gangster films - from iconic hits like Scarface, Goodfellas and The Godfather (parts one and two; we don't talk about that third installment) right through to more modern classics like American Gangster and The Departed.

And don't even get me started on The Sopranos, which might just be the greatest TV series ever made.

Yup, there are some corkers out there - and it seems like Gotti could well join that star-studded, blood-splattered line-up with its release on 15 June.

Starring John Travolta in the titular role, the film is a biopic detailing the life of New York mobster John Gotti, who was widely regarded as one of the most dangerous crime bosses in the world.

Having wormed his way into the powerful Gambino crime family as the protégé of its underboss Aniello Dellacroce, Gotti eventually became top dog after he organised the murder of its head, Paul Castellano.

Exploring Gotti's life over the course of three decades, along with his criminal career, the film also focuses on the gangster's relationship with wife Victoria - who's played by Travolta's real-life wife, Kelly Preston.

During his time at the top, Gotti built up a charismatic public image - even gained the nickname of the 'Dapper Don' for his sharp dress sense - something that Travolta was sure to channel in his performance.

He told ABC that he managed to get into character by borrowing some of Gotti's accessories during filming.

"I got to wear his real jewellery. In several of the scenes I'm wearing his real ties," he said.

The gangster's son, John Gotti Jr., reportedly also frequently visited the set and was a key advisor for the film.

Directed by Entourage star Kevin Connolly, the film was originally due for release in the US before Christmas, but the date got pushed back when distributor Lionsgate pulled out.

Along with Travolta and Preston, Gotti features TV staple Stacy Keach as underboss and character acting legend Leo Rossi as his enforcer. Relative newcomers Spencer Lofranco will play John Gotti junior, the gangster's son.

But we're obviously most excited to see Travolta in action. It's not to say that he hasn't played criminals before - having portrayed hitman Vincent Vega in Pulp Fiction, loan shark Chili Palmer in Get Shorty and the terrorist/cop/whatever it was that he played in Face/Off - but there's something about Gotti that looks like it'll be a role to remember.
