Netflix's hit horror series Haunting of Hill House will be returning to scare us all shitless once again - although not in the way you might think.

Rather than giving us a sequel, series creator Mike Flanagan and executive producer Trevor Macy will be going for an anthology, which means the next instalment will focus on a completely new story and a new batch of characters.

According to Variety, Netflix has entered into a multi-year television deal with Flanagan and Macy, which will see both produce new TV projects exclusively for the streaming giant.

"Mike Flanagan and Trevor Macy are masterful at creating authentically frightening stories that leave audiences on the edge of their seats, but unable to look away," said Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix.

"We're excited to continue our partnership with them on the Haunting series and future projects to come."

Flanagan and Macy - who previously collaborated on films including Gerard's Game and Hush - added: "Netflix has been an important part of our story, and we're proud to have worked with them on The Haunting of Hill House, not to mention Gerard's Game, Hush and Before I Wake."

They added: "They've enabled and supported a great deal of our work and we look forward to much more."

The first series of The Haunting of Hill House, based on Shirley Jackson's 1959 novel, was released back in October, and received rave reviews from across the board. Well, from those who like being freaked out, with reports of people passing out watching the show and cast members admitting they were seeing things and had struggled to sleep during filming.

But then hints of an anthology started doing the rounds, with Carla Gugino (who plays Olivia Crain) telling the Hollywood Reporter: "Mike Flanagan said he would be interested in the notion of an anthology, where some actors come back to play different characters.

"I think he feels like he has told the complete story of the Crain family. But if I was invited and I was able to, I would really love to, just because I do love to collaborate with him."

I'm torn between feeling grateful for more to come, but also petrified for what the future holds...
