HBO Release The First Teaser Trailer For The New Watchmen Series

Let's hope they do the comic justice

After having shown us a few tantalising snippets from it, HBO has finally released an actual teaser trailer for the upcoming Watchmen TV series.

The show is based on the comic written all the way back in 1986 by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, and tells the tale of a load of superheroes who have been driven underground and are treated as criminals.

Don't worry - it looks as if it might do a better job than Zach Snyder's 2009 film adaptation.

This new TV version has been created by Damon Lindelof - who brought us Lost and The Leftovers - and it looks like Jeremy Irons, Tim Blake Nelson, Jean Smart, Regina King and Don Johnson are all set to star.

Oh, and the score will be provided by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor alongside Atticus Ross.

From what we know so far - which admittedly is very little - it seems as if this version is going to be less straightforward than Snyder's take.

The comic series is widely regarded as a masterpiece, and tells the story of a world in political turmoil as a result of the Cold War between Russia and the United States.

This new version seems likely to be set several years after the events of the comic book, although Lindelof has previously stated that he doesn't think of it as a sequel or reboot.

HBO

Last year, he shared an Instagram post that said: "Those issues are sacred ground and will not be retread nor recreated nor reproduced nor rebooted.

"They will however be remixed. We are not making a 'sequel' either.

"This story will be set in the world its creators painstakingly built... but in the tradition of the work that inspired it, this new story must be original. It has to vibrate with the seismic unpredictability of its own tectonic plates."

HBO

He continued: "The Old Testament [that'll be the original comic, then] was specific to the Eighties of [Ronald] Reagan and [Margaret] Thatcher and [Mikhail] Gorbachev. Ours needs to resonate with the frequency of [Donald] Trump and [Theresa] May and [Vladimir] Putin and the horse that he rides around on, shirtless,

"And speaking of Horsemen, The End of the World is off the table... which means the heroes and villains - as if the two are distinguishable - are playing for different stakes entirely."

We've no idea yet when it is to be released. Some point in Autumn 2019 is basically as good as we've got. It looks pretty cool though, so here's hoping that it's worth the wait and they can do the original comic justice.
