Fans will be more than pleased that there has been a date announced for when we can see Keanu Reeves reprise his role as John Wick.

The Hollywood Reporter says that the third installment in the franchise, John Wick: Chapter 3 will drop on May 17, 2019, though no plot details have been revealed just yet.

The original John Wick was released in October 2014, becoming somewhat of a surprising success, grossing $88 million worldwide.

The sequel, Chapter 2, released this year, was clearly eagerly anticipated, smashing the previous figures by making $171 million at the box office.

It's possible that with just under two years to go until the third arrives that hype will build enough for yet another incredible take.

Earlier in the year it was also reported that Reeves would play Wick in a television series that would serve as a prequel to the events of the first film.

However, the series created by Chad Stahelski won't actually focus on Wick himself, but instead on the Continental - a hotel chain for assassins, as featured in the films.

The hotels are essentially 'safe houses' where assassins can get the tools they need and hide out, but where no 'business' is allowed to be carried out.

Speaking of his new series, Stahelski said: "I think he would make an appearance. I think that's part of his thing, [but the series] isn't centred around John Wick.

"I like telling stories from my one character's perspective. Once you put that aside with the TV show, [you can] expand to all the different characters and follow them throughout their journey.

"You can be with the consigliere, concierge, the sommelier - you can be with all these different characters and walk through the world in different aspects; ones that I'm a little limited [from exploring] by staying with my lead guy."

When Stahelski set out to make the first film in the series, he had every intention of it being a one off.

"For us and Keanu, John Wick was a one-off," he said.

"Then all of a sudden everybody wanted us to do No. 2, and No. 2 did really well. So now, he kind of had to choose where to put his time, and he's kind of vested into John Wick - at least for the series and No. 3."
