It won't come as news to you that there is a John Wick television series currently in the works. What will, however, is that it will be a prequel to the movies.

The exciting spin-off is set to air on the Starz channel in the US and according to one of the company's execs, it will give fans a taste of what the Boogeyman's life was like before his dog - and wife - were killed.

Speaking to Deadline, Jeffrey Hirsch revealed that it would be set before the movies. But before you all start getting too excited, the series won't be hitting TV screens anytime soon.

Hirsch said: "My sense is that where we are today, the movie date has been set but we're still in early development on the series so [it will air] most likely after."

There's rumours Keanu Reeves will star in the series.

There are also rumours that Keanu Reeves would also star in the new film, however once again, Hirsch wouldn't go into detail about exactly how much screen time the star would get.

He added: "That's a really good question that I'm not going to answer. 'No answer' is as good a tease you're going to get. It's a great franchise, we're excited about bringing that show to the network."

The long-awaited series was first picked up early last year by Starz - a Lionsgate-backed channel - and according to reports, will be written by Chris Collins.

Fans of the original trilogy will also be pleased to know that Chad Stahelski - The Matrix, John Wick - will direct the very first episode and will work as an executive producer on the series.

But as Hirsch says, this is all a long way off, with John Wick 4 already in the works.

Stahelski let the cat out of the bag during a Reddit AMA that a fourth movie could be on its way.

The filmmaker let the exciting info slip on Friday, when asked which of the John Wick films was the most difficult to make.

"[The first one] was difficult because we didn't understand what we wanted to do," he said during the Reddit session.

"Number 2, we had to map up a whole world we didn't think of before. [Chapter 3], how do we expand and get the audience something creative, not just bigger and cooler? Number 4, I'm certain, will be more difficult."
