Out of all the generic 'this celeb looks totally unrecognisable' stories, it's probably fair to assume that Jonah Hill is the subject of half of them.

He burst onto the movie scene as Seth in Superbad, a big guy in high school hell bent on losing his virginity, but since then his weight has gone up and down.

Every time he loses weight, it seems to be a shock to people. He's reportedly at his lowest ever weight while filming 10-part Netflix series Maniac, in New York City, and looks like a shadow of himself.

He was filming the dark, new comedy series with Sting's wife, Trudie Styler. Maniac is an adaptation of the 2014 Norwegian series of the same name. The story revolves around the adventures that a man imagines while on a psychiatric ward.

The 33-year-old has never shied away from the fact his weight balloons and then deflates. He's previously spoken about how he often sheds pounds.

His 21 Jump Street co-star, Channing Tatum, can be thanked for the motivation to get him in shape, as he once told Jimmy Fallon.

Tatum, once upon a time, was that cheesy, rom-com, heartthrob type and had the annoyingly chiseled body to go with it. Because of that, Hill rang him up to ask for advice. Unsurprisingly, he got a very frank and straight-to-the-point reply.

"I wanted to get in better shape, so I called Channing Tatum and said, 'Hey, if I ate less and go to a trainer, will I get in better shape?'," Hill said during an interview on The Tonight Show. "Yes, you dumb motherfucker, of course you will. It's the simplest thing in the entire world."

For his role in the 2016 film War Dogs, the 33-year-old gained a reported 40 pounds, but was then pictured back in the summer after losing it all and more but now it seems he's added even more to that loss.

Back in 2014 he sat down with an interviewer who was keen to talk about his weight.

The reporter in question starts by asking an appropriate question about his weight loss: "What made you decide to make the change?"

"I just decided one day I wanted to be healthier, I went and saw a nutrionist, that's what I did, and stuck to it," replied the star.

He added to ABC News that there was nothing exciting about his dieting.

"I wish there was some crazy thing that I did, like a pill or a genie or something, but I went to see a nutritionist, and he told me what to eat and to change my habits and stuff," he said.

"I found that Japanese food was very helpful to me."
