Everyone out there thought they'd be able to catch their first glimpse of Avengers: Infinity War on May 4th but Marvel Studios has sprung a surprise on us all.

Yesterday afternoon the studio in charge of the Marvel Cinematic Universe announced that the release date for the long-awaited Avengers sequel will now be 27 April: a week ahead of schedule.

They didn't just casually drop it out there either on a new poster. Instead they recruited Robert Downey Jr. - Iron Man, of course - to help them do the honours on social media.

It all started when Marvel Studios' Twitter account casually looked to ask people how excited they were to see Infinity War when it came out on its previous release date of 4 May:

Of course, everyone's excited to see it - but Robert Downey Jr. seemed especially keen, asking the studio if they could possibly do him a solid and bring the date forward a bit. And no one would turn Iron Man down.

Sure, getting your own private screening of a highly awaited movie is cool, but going to the cinema alone isn't the most fun in the world.

That led Downey Jr. to ask first if he could take a bud along, before asking the studio if the entire world could join him. Soft sell. Classic move, Mr. Stark.

Going from a room full of mates to the whole world is a bit of a leap, but Marvel gladly ran with it, quickly rustling up an updated poster. Wait, it's almost as if the studio and Downey Jr. had planned this in advance...

The new release date is great news for Marvel and fans alike who can now enjoy more breathing space in a packed spring schedule with Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story both being released in mid-to-late May.

A week less to wait before we all get to enjoy Infinity War, then. Ain't too shabby, is it?
