Netflix has announced that Marvel's Daredevil will not return following its third season.

In a statement shared with Deadline, the streaming service said: "Marvel's Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix.

"We are tremendously proud of the show's last and final season and although it's painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note.

"We're thankful to showrunner Erik Oleson, the show's writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we're grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years."

The statement went on to assure fans that although there would be no new episodes, the previous three season would remain on Netflix, available to stream.

It also promised: "The Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel."

Debra Ann Woll, who plays Karen Page in Daredevil and The Punisher, took to Twitter to say she was 'so sad' to hear the news.

Co-star Amy Rutberg, who played Marci Stahl, also posted to say she was 'heartbroken':

Fans of the show rushed to Twitter to vent about the show's cancellation, while many heaped praise on Cox for his portrayal of the character.

One wrote: "Goodbye, Daredevil. I am unbelievably sad we won't see more of this masterpiece. Thank you for three amazing seasons and for everyone's hard work to all the characters you helped bringing to life. You deserved better, but you will never be forgotten."

While a second posted: "Charlie Cox as Daredevil is one of the greatest castings of all time. A brilliant actor who perfectly captured the essence of the character, and someone who genuinely loves the material and the character."

This is the third show that has been cancelled from the Netflix and Marvel collaboration, following the announcements that Luke Cage and Iron Fist were being scrapped.

The Punisher and Jessica Jones still remain, although no official return has been released for any forthcoming seasons.
