Netflix has taken the bold step to cancel the mystery drama show The OA.

The show was about 'Prairie Johnson, an adopted young woman who resurfaces after having been missing for seven years. Upon her return, Prairie calls herself The OA (for Original Angel), exhibits scars on her back, and can see, despite having been blind when she disappeared.'

But after two seasons, Variety is reporting the show won't be renewed for a third season.

Netflix's Vice President of original content Cindy Holland told the news organisation: "We are incredibly proud of the 16 mesmerizing chapters of 'The OA,' and are grateful to Brit and Zal for sharing their audacious vision and for realizing it through their incredible artistry.

"We look forward to working with them again in the future, in this and perhaps many other dimensions."

But Brit Marling who plays Prairie and produced the show wrote on Instagram: "Zal and I are deeply sad not to finish the story. The first time I heard the news I had a good cry.

"So did one of our executives at Netflix that has been with us since the early days when we were sketching out Hap's basement on the floor of our production office in Queens. It's been an intense journey for everyone who worked on and cared for this story."

Naturally, the news has angered many people on social media who absolutely loved the show.

"The OA is a story that is meant to be 5 seasons long. We just need those 3 final seasons...then we can be done," wrote one person.

"We desperately NEED media like this. This series has meant so much to so many. Literally would cancel my membership over this," said another.

"The OA is one of the most original TV shows out there with such a well thought out and mind blowing narrative. It has LGBT+ mental heath rep and some of the most amazing cinematography and young acting I've ever seen. Brit and Zal are geniuses who don't deserve this."

A fourth viewer said: "13 Reasons garbage is renewed and nobody asked for it yet a amazing, highly respected show like The OA gets cancelled."

The hashtag #SaveOA has started trending on Twitter with more than 110,000 tweets being posted about the show.

We have seen shows get cancelled and then picked back up in the past so who knows, maybe we could see a revival of The OA in the not too distant future.
