Netflix Releases Trailer For New Docu-Drama The Legend Of Cocaine Island

It's like Treasure Island, but the treasure is really cocaine

"A Northern fairy tale starts off, 'Once upon a time', a Southern fairy tale starts off 'Y'all ain't gonna believe this shit'."

That's how the trailer for The Legend of Cocaine Island sets the scene, and it seems as if the second part of that statement is definitely true.

It's a new documentary being released by Netflix that tells of a bizarre urban legend. Basically, like all great treasure hunting stories, there is an island, there is a map, and the treasure is buried. What makes this one different is that the treasure is about $2m worth of cocaine.

The Legend of Cocaine Island has been directed by Theo Love, and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival last year, before it was picked up by the streaming giant.

In a nutshell, a guy called Rodney Hyden, a businessman from South Florida, seeks a second chance after he loses all of his wealth in the recession. That second chance arrives in the form of a potentially fictional story about a huge stash of buried cocaine on a Caribbean island.

Netflix's official synopsis explains: "Rodney Hyden is an American dreamer: a small business owner and family man from Central Florida. But after he's wiped out by the Great Recession, Rodney hears a story that could be his ticket out of his mounting debt: a tale of a map, an island and buried treasure.

"Fuelled by a combination of economic desperation and blissful ignorance, Rodney hatches a plan to retrieve a possibly mythical $2 million stash of cocaine from its reported Caribbean hiding place.

"With the help of a colorful group of misfits - and without prior drug-running experience - Rodney sets out in pursuit of his very own American dream, with surprising results."

The film, a docu-drama that relies on lots of recreated scenes starring Hyden himself, focusses on Hyden and a few others' search for this highly illegal buried treasure. As he says at one stage: "We've got a plane, we've got a pilot, and we've got a plan."

Sounds interesting, right?

Well, if you're keen to watch how it all goes - and we're assured that it doesn't turn out exactly as you might think - you will be able to stream the film on 29 March.

Hey, there'll be nothing else going on that day, right? Plenty of time to hide from the world and lose yourself in a cocaine-fuelled treasure story.
