Netflix is delving into the horror genre once again - this time the streaming service will be releasing the post-apocalyptic series Black Summer.

The series, which has been compared to the likes of The Walking Dead, will land on Netflix today (11 April).

When it comes to horror, the streaming service has kept us enthralled thanks to the likes of The Ritual, Bird Box and Hemlock Grove - so we certainly have high hopes for this one.

We've all seen The Walking Dead, of course. We know it deals with how people would survive with the world in a post-apocalyptic state, as zombies walk around all over the shop. But Black Summer, on the other hand, will show us what it would be like in the early days of such an outbreak.

The show's description on Netflix reads: "In the dark, early days of a zombie apocalypse, complete strangers band together to find the strength they need to survive and get back to loved ones."

The show will focus on family separation, by the looks of things. Jamie King (My Bloody Valentine) plays Rose, a mum who gets separated from her daughter as the zombie outbreak takes hold, and bands together with a group of people to try and find her daughter.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, King said: "She is a mid-western woman, who is in love with her husband and has been with him for a long time, and loves her daughter, and finds herself in these extraordinary circumstances.

"Her child is ripped from her, torn away from her, and [she] will stop at nothing to go get her."

The creator of Black Summer has already worked on a zombie series before, Z Nation, and in fact this new series is its prequel.

Z Nation was more suited to the comedy/drama category of the horror genre and Karl Schaefer says that Black Summer won't be anything like that.

He says that it will focus more on the 'old school' type of zombie horror, even though it's technically a spin-off.

Looks tame, doesn't it?

Jodi Binstock, one of the producers for the series, told Mandy: "Black Summer is referred to in Z Nation as the summer where everything went to hell, so that is where Black Summer picks up.

"This show is not tongue-in-cheek, it's very, very serious: it's as if the zombie apocalypse really happened in 2018 and explores what that would be for all of us. It's a very unique style that I think people will really respond to.

"It's only told from the point of view of the characters - we don't learn anything that the characters don't and it's fantastically shot. The dynamics of the way that they have crafted the storytelling is very cinematic and I think people will really respond to it."

Get ready, folks.
