It looks like Kevin Smith's iconic stoner duo Jay and Silent Bob will be returning for a new movie, 16 years after the release of Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back.

The announcement was made by Smith, who plays Bob alongside his acting partner Jason Mewes, on Twitter.

"16 years ago, #JayAndSilentBobStrikeBack was released in theaters," he wrote. "And this Fall, we shoot a follow-up flick called #JayAndSilentBobReboot!".

Filming will begin over the next few month with a release date yet to be confirmed.

Consequence Of Sound reports that it will be "a tongue-in-cheek, silly-ass satire that pokes fun at the movie business's recent re-do obsession" and we can expect "an all-star cast of cameos and familiar faces."

In case you've forgotten, this is how the duo were first introduced to audiences:

It goes without saying that their first appearance in Clerks was legendary and I am hoping for more of the same in the next film.

Here's how Twitter reacted to the news of the pair's return:

Hopefully the new movie won't disappoint.

Smith had intended to return to action with another installment of the Clerks series, following 2006's Clerks II, but those plans were scuppered when Jeff Anderson announced he would not return to play comic lead Randall for a third full feature.

"I would love to [make Clerks 3]," Smith told LRM Online in April. "We need the other guy to do that. We need Jeff Anderson, the guy who plays Randall. He doesn't want to do it. So sadly, that gets put to the side. I want to do it so badly. I can't do it. It was written for him. The Randall part is the whole movie. It's Randall's flick."

"Unless he changes his mind, and if and when he changes his mind.....I doubt it will ever happen. Then we can kind of move forward.

"I could never recast it. He is Randal."
