It seems that after waiting for what felt like an eternity for the seventh season of Game of Thrones, it was over in next to no time.

Once again were forced to read fan theories and watch old episodes to get our fix while we wait for the next series to arrive.

Luckily there is enough for us to sink our teeth into, including a bunch of animated videos which will be popping up on the official Game of Thrones YouTube channel.

The short series will apparently explain the origins of the houses of Westeros, as well as explore various backstories, which will help shed more light on the current plot lines in GoT.

The first episode, Valyria's Last Scion: House Targaryen was posted this week and already has over one million views.

The animated series may help to fill in some mysteries, as well as possibly help with some fan theories.

This sort of idea has come from many people before, such as Patrick McCarthy, who spent two years animating an entire episode of the potential series Doom of Valyria.

Also an animated series, it serves as a prequel. McCarthy told LADbible: ""The clip is a trailer for an animated pilot about the most devastating yet most mysterious event in Game of Thrones history - The Doom of Valyria.

"For 5,000 years, the Valyrian Freehold ruled the world, until its surrounding volcanoes obliterated it from history. But, what truly destroyed Valyria?"

HBO announced in May that it's on a quest to replace the most popular show in the company's history, taking the unusual step of developing four different ideas from four different writers.

The move represents a potentially massive expansion of the popular fantasy universe created by author George R.R Martin.

It would be the first time in the channel's history that it's made a spin-off series of one of its major hits.

The fresh ideas come from: Max Borenstein (Kong: Skull Island), Jane Goldman (Kingsman: The Secret Service), Brian Helgeland (A Knight's Tale), and Carly Wray (Mad Men).

HBO, without revealing too many details about the ideas, said the shows will 'explore different time periods of George R.R. Martin's vast and rich universe'.

GoT co-creators, David Benioff and Dan Weiss, have previously said that they do not plan to be involved in any follow-up projects, but it's also been announced that they will be attached to the new shows as executive producers.
