Oscar Nominations 2018: Meryl Streep, #MeToo & Missouri Set To Win Big In March

The 2018 Oscar nominations are out next Tuesday so here's a run down of a few of the favourites in the major categories.

It's that time of the year again where all of the stars in Hollywood get dressed up and give each other a nice firm pat on the back for being so great.

Yes, the Academy Awards are coming, and whilst the ceremony is not until March the nominations will be announced this coming Tuesday.

This year is a bit different too as - unlike usual - nobody really knows who is going to win what.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri came out of left field to win a whole load of Golden Globe awards and will be fancied in the Best Picture category at the Oscars, too, but there are a whole load of films that will probably think they are in with a shout.

Amongst the top contenders will be Call Me by Your Name, The Shape of Water, and Lady Bird.

Unlike at the Globes, the Best Director category should at least feature one woman. Greta Gerwig was overlooked two weeks ago for her directorial debut Lady Bird, but looks certain to be given a nod by the Academy.

Speaking of female nominees, Meryl Streep will be in the running for the Best Actress gong for her part in The Post but will face some stiff competition from Three Billboards' Frances McDormand - who took the Golden Globe - and Saoirse Ronan for her performance in Lady Bird.

The Best Actor award might be a bit easier to predict. Gary Oldman's turn as Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour looks set to see him bag his first Academy Award after being nominated for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in 2012. He also won the Best Actor Golden Globe and the Critic's Choice Award last week to put him in line for a full house.

James Franco is also in contention for his first Oscar. His performance as Tommy Wiseau saw him take a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, before Wiseau himself (invited to the awards by Franco) tried to grab the mic.

Franco pulled the mic back and denied us the chance to hear the wisdom of one of cinema's craziest visionaries. Perhaps he'll let Tommy loose if he wins the biggest prize available to actors.

Whatever happens, the #MeToo movement will also play a big part in the event. Hollywood is still being rocked by allegations of historical sexual abuse from some huge names and they will be looking to grow the movement to empower victims to speak out against their abusers and raise awareness.

The #metoo movement is sure to feature.

More power to them.
