Paul Rudd has joined the cast of the Ghostbusters reboot and he is very excited about it.

Announcing the news on Twitter, the official Ghostbusters account shared a video of Rudd, with the caption: "Look who accepted the call."

Speaking in the clip, Rudd says: "When I heard Jason Reitman was going to be doing a new version in the fall... and when my agents called him and said, 'Hey Jason, we hear there's a part of a young... semi-young... strapping man that needs to be cast...' Who you gonna call?

"When I heard they were going to call me, well, I nearly slimed myself.

"I can't wait to join the cast this fall for Ghostbusters. In fact, I'm sliming myself right now." Lovely news.

In a statement, director Jason Reitman said he was 'thrilled' that the star had signed up.

"I've been wanting to work with Paul Rudd since my short film opened for Wet Hot American Summer at Sundance. Thrilled he'll be joining this new chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe," he said.

Reitman is the son of Ivan Reitman, who directed the original Ghostbusters all the way back in 1984 - so no pressure there, then.

Although no official synopsis has been revealed, 'insiders' told Variety that the flick will centre on a single mum, reportedly to be played by Carrie Coon, and her two kids, tipped to be played by Stranger Things actors Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace who previously starred in The Haunting of Hill House.

Refusing to give us any clues about the new movie, Reitman said: "This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present.

"We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet."

Speaking in 2018, Dan Aykroyd, who starred in the original, gave a cheeky hint that he might be appearing, too.

"I think we have a story that's going to work and it's being written right now by really good filmmakers," he said on The Big Interview With Dan Rather.

"I can't say their names. They're a good team and they are making an effort to bring back all the emotion and spirit of the first two movies and then take it into the 21st century with a vernacular that's needed today to get it across."

He also seemed pretty sure that former cast-mate Bill Murray would be back, adding: "The story is so good, he'll come, even if he plays a ghost."

The movie is set to hit cinemas on 10 July 2020.
