People were pretty stoked to see Chris Lilley's multiple personalities again after the trailer for his new Netflix series, Lunatics, dropped online.

It's been years since we've seen the comedian bring fictional people to life and the response was overwhelming.

But the dust hadn't even settled before people started noticing one big potential elephant in the room.

Lunatics will feature a real estate entrepreneur with a big bum, a cutting edge fashion designer, a budding museum owner, an arts and crafts influencer, and the future Earl of Gayhurst.

It will also feature a 'pet psychologist to the stars'.

It's this character, described in a press release as a South African lesbian, that's caused all the commotion. Jana dons an afro wig and people have been suggesting that Lilley is doing blackface to portray the character.

There were rumours on set that the character was actually going to be Lilley's portrayal of a Rachel Dolezal-esque personality, an American woman who claimed she was black when she was white.

A spokesperson released a statement to the Daily Beast last year, which said: "Netflix have informed us that there are no plans for Chris to play characters of different races for this project."

Lilley faced some pretty heavy criticism over his portrayal of S.Mouse, a black rapper in Angry Boys as well as Jonah from Summer Heights High and the spinoff series.

Jonah from Tonga fell flat for a variety of reasons, but racism was a clear issue with most critics.

The SHH spin-off for Jonah was condemned by a swath of organisations representing minorities, including the NAACP, the National Hispanic Media Coalition, the American Indians in Film/TV, Empowering Pacific Islander Communities and The Asian Pacific American Media Coalition.

Morgan Godfery's review in the Guardian said: "No matter how worthy the satire, Jonah's brownface is never neutral. No matter how funny Ja'mie can be, it is still a white bloke acting out problems he's never had.

"Is it really necessary to dress in brownface to make the point that "the Island boys", to quote one of Jonah's teachers, have a hard time at school?"

Lunatics premieres on Netflix April 19.
