Production For Live-Action Tom & Jerry Will Begin This Year

The classic American comedy cartoon was created in the 1940's - nearly 80 years later and it is being adapted into a live-action film

Did anyone else watch hours and hours of Tom & Jerry when they were younger? My granddad went to extreme lengths and would video tape six hours of back-to-back footage at Christmas time which would serve as our 'go-to' TV just in case it rained.

Even back in the 90s I could tell it was an old cartoon - 50 years old, to be precise. But now, nearly 80 years after it was created, production is set to begin for a live-action Tom & Jerry movie.

The American slapstick comedy cartoon is no stranger to the modern twist - there are loads of Tom & Jerry films, including the 1992 travesty of which we dare not speak (unlike the usually silent cat-and-mouse team, who were controversially given voice-overs in that particular outing). But this new movie will be a live-action animation/hybrid.

Filming for Tom & Jerry is set to begin in July 2019 and will take place in the UK. Tim Story, director of the Ride Along franchise, is in negotiations to be brought in for the movie, according to Variety.

It is reported that when Warner Bros. floated the possibility of rebooting the classic cartoon, Story immediately mentioned his admiration for the characters and how he would love to tackle it.

Variety reported that the plan for the film is to shoot in the real world, with animated versions of the titular duo to be added in later. But the big question is, of course, whether the characters will remain silent.

Good news! It's believed that they will stick to the traditional version of relying on physical comedy, meaning that there won't be any need to cast actors to voice the rivalling pair. So rest easy, old skool T&J fans.

We're also pretty sure the plot will be suitably anarchic as well, with the pair no doubt subjecting each other to all manner of cartoonishly violent acts - I mean, what fun would there be in producing a film about a cat and mouse living happily ever after together?

For newcomers, the cartoon is focused on a house cat, Tom, and his attempts to catch a little brown mouse, Jerry. In a typical episode, things swiftly escalate and before long the pair embroiled in utter mayhem. Classic cartoon material, basically.

Tom rarely succeeds in catching Jerry, mainly because of the mouse's cleverness and cunning, although there's often a degree of pure luck involved. At times, though, we see a different side to the pair, when they strike up a genuine bond with each other and set aside their rivalry.

Is anyone else pretty excited to see what they're going to get up to?
