Good news, telly hipsters - Rick & Morty has been renewed for a further 70 episodes and production has begun on season four.

Fans had been feeling a little short-changed by the much-anticipated season three, which only amounted to 10 episodes, but they can begin to get excited again, as it has been announced that the next batch will feature a bumper 70 episodes.

"We're super excited that, for the first time ever, we're locked in, we know what the future is, we have job security," co-creator Justin Roiland told Polygon.

"Harmon is in great spirits, we have a great writer's room. We want the episodes to stay good, but we do also want to try to turn them around a little quicker now that we have this big order, I think it gives us the ability to be faster."

"We're not going to do these long breaks, these chasms in between seasons anymore. We're going to schedule vacation time and just keep the machine going. It's going to be really cool."

Fans had been worried that the show might not continue at all after repeated delays and then the shorter-than-expected third season.

It took two years for season three to appear and there had been worries that the fourth outing would take just as long.

With the news that production is already underway, Rick & Morty fans can be confident that the wait will not be as long this time around. Justin Roiland is confident that episodes will come thick and fast once the writing room gets back up to speed.

"It's exciting, it's a little surreal," he said. "Even just being in the writers room for half the day every day this week, the ideas... It's going to be great."

Writer Ryan Ridley had previously cast doubt on the series back in October of last year, telling the Detroit Cast: "As far as I know no one's working on the show and I'm certainly not, so I don't know what's going on.

"I haven't heard anything. And yeah, they really take their time. I never understood why everybody - all parties, Dan [Harmon, co-creator], Justin and Adult Swim - didn't get their shit together and make the show fast.

"I just don't get it. It doesn't make any sense to me. I'm sure they all have their reasons."

On whether there would be a fourth season, Ridley had said: "I highly doubt there won't be, I'm just shocked that it's taking... We got done writing season three in November of last year (2016) and here we are 11 months later.

"And then I know how long the show takes to write, let alone animate, so it's just like, I'd be surprised if there was a fourth season on the air any sooner than 2019-in late 2019. It's crazy. I just, get your shit together you guys. Get it all together and put it in a backpack."

Despite Ridley's pessimism, it seems like the show is set to continue for a long time. Szechuan sauce, anybody?
