Fans of the legend that is Sir David Attenborough can rejoice as the nature expert is heading back to our screens with a new must-see BBC documentary.

The 92-year-old who stole our hearts - and viewing habits - with TV shows such as Blue Planet and Planet Earth is coming back with a new series, Dynasties, which is said to be "even more intense and gripping" than his previous shows.

Though it was actually announced back in February, BBC Earth got the excitement rolling this week with a tweet saying: "BBC Earth brings you #Dynasties, narrated by Sir David Attenborough. Coming soon."

Executive producer Mike Gunton said that Dynasties is a "landmark" series that will have a tighter focus than Attenborough's previous two shows.

Each episode will follow the lives of one of the five animals depicted on the poster - lions, hunting dogs, chimpanzees, tigers and emperor penguins - at the "most critical period in their lives".

In a statement about the show it said in February: "The odds are stacked against them - our planet is changing at an extraordinary rate and the habitats these animals live in are under increasing pressure, not least from the impact of humanity itself."

From the team behind Life Story and Planet Earth II, Dynasties, is said to be "an intense portrayal of the lives of these animals as they unfold, day-by-day, hour-by-hour, where the tiniest incident may end up having a huge consequence on their future.

"Their chances of success depend on their own strength of character, their choices and on luck. But these animals do not operate alone - their success or failure will also hinge on how they work with, or against, their own families."

Charlotte Moore, BBC Director of Content, says: "The wonderful David Attenborough will inspire audiences once again when he brings the natural world to life on BBC One with Dynasty. Four years in the making, capturing extraordinary family dynamics and behaviour, I hope these intimate animal dramas will connect with audiences just as Blue Planet II and Planet Earth II did."

In a statement, Gunton continued: "After making Planet Earth II, it's very exciting to now have the chance to show another, and I think even more intense and gripping, perspective on the lives of our planet's most impressive yet vulnerable creatures."

BBC Earth got fans more riled up as they confirmed the show would hit television screens in autumn.

Attenborough is a prominent advocate for the protection of animals. He recently voiced his opinions on the ivory trade and extinction in a video he made for LADbible as part of our Extinct campaign.

He stated in the video: "To never see a living elephant again is just too appalling."

Extinct is LADbible's campaign to raise awareness and share inspiration about the progress that's being made to help endangered animals.
