Sony Pictures Confirm That 'Zombieland 2' Has An Official Release Date

If they don't bring Bill Murray back, we riot.

Sony Entertainment have announced that Zombieland 2 will be released next year on October 11th, according to reports by Deadline.

It had been known for quite a while now that the much-beloved zombie comedy horror film was to get a sequel, and it had also been reported that all of the original cast, as well as the writing and directing team were on board.

This is the first confirmation of a release date, however, and that makes it big news.

Zombieland 2 - if that is what it's actually going to be called - will see Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, and Abigail Breslin, reprise their roles one more time.

Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who wrote the first film, as well as writing the Deadpool movies, will return to write the sequel.

It also looks as if Ruben Fleischer will direct, too. That's the whole band back together, good news.

Given that all of the originals are returning, we can start to get excited about this sequel. The first movie saw the four main characters, named Wichita, Columbus, Tallahassee, and Little Rock after their home towns, battle their way towards California against an army of flesh eating zombies.

Along the way they faced many challenges, and even met Bill Murray. It's not clear whether Bill Murray is coming back, though. He was pretty succinctly killed off during the first film, but hey, the whole thing is about the dead coming back to life, right?

The new film will coincide almost perfectly with the tenth anniversary of the original. Paul Wernick spoke to Vulture about how this spurred them on to get cracking on the next instalment.

He said: "We're going on the tenth anniversary of Zombieland. Zombieland came out October of 2009. We don't know what you get someone for their tenth anniversary, but it may be a Zombieland 2.

"The hope is that we're shooting that thing early 2019 for an October of '19 release."

We now know that will happen. They're due to start shooting in January next year.

Sanford Panitch, President of Columbia Pictures, who will produce and distribute the film, said: "This is one of those projects that fans have wanted to see happen for a long time - and no one wanted to see it happen more than Emma, Woody, Jesse and Abigail.

"These are some of the most in-demand actors, and I think they are making this movie because they love these characters. We are thrilled Ruben was willing to come back to direct the sequel, as his work on Venom has been truly amazing."

Roll on October 11th, 2019.
