Filming on the long-awaited Sopranos prequel has finally finished. Alessandro Nivola, who will star in the movie, posted on Twitter confirming the news along with an image of a shirt featuring the name of the new film.

All based on the events before The Sopranos, the prequel will be a full length feature film rather than a series and is called The Many Saints of Newark.

It will tell the story of the Newark riots during the 1960s that saw huge amounts of violence between African-American and Italian-American gangsters.

But - with the show's star James Gandolfini passing away in 2013, the jury was out on who would play his character and lead protagonist in the show, Tony Soprano.

There was only one logical option, as it was later confirmed that his son Michael Gandolfini would take on the task of living up to his dad's famous legacy.

Widely regarded as one of the best pieces of TV ever made, when it ended, everyone had a massive Sopranos-shaped hole in their lives, with years of speculation around the franchise returning.

In 2017, fans' prayers were answered, as HBO confirmed it would be creating a Sopranos prequel.

Launching into our lives on 10 January 1999, it ran for a total of six seasons until it concluded in 2007 after 86 episodes and became an instant hit, with The New York Times saying at the time that it 'just may be the greatest work of American popular culture of the last quarter century'. Bold - but perhaps deserved.

It continues to resonate with so many to this day, remaining a genuine cult favourite 20 years after premiering.

David Chase, the creator of the show, has produced and co-written the prequel alongside Lawrence Conner.

The original series won 21 Emmy awards, five Golden Globes and more during its initial run, but many were left unhappy with the ending.

The controversy arose ended the final episode by cutting to black. For those that had invested years into the show, it was seen as a bit of an abrupt way to end the series forever.

Let's hope they manage to come up with an ending we can all agree on for the film.

The Many Saints of Newark is set to be released on 25 September 2020.
