Kurt Russell's Netflix Christmas movie has had over 20 million views in its first week.

According to Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos, festive flick The Christmas Chronicles is the 'most successful' movie of Russell's career.

Although Netflix traditionally doesn't release viewership figures, Sarandos revealed it'd had 20 million views across its first week at the UBS Global Media and Communications Conference, Business Insider reports.

He said: "If every one of those was a movie ticket purchase, that's a $200 million opening week.

"Even movies that go on to $1 billion don't typically do that in the first week."

As Netflix refuses to reveal official numbers, it's not known how many of those views were repeat viewings, but even taking that into consideration it's still a mind-blowing amount of folks tuning in.

He also went on to say that The Christmas Chronicles had the 'most impact' of any of Russell's movies to date.

"It's because, even in his successful career, he's never had that many people see one of his movies in the first week ever.

"That's a testimony to what we can bring to the market for storytellers today that we couldn't have 10 years ago."

The movie tells the tale of a couple of kids - played by Derby Camp and Judah Lewis - who stay up late hoping to catch a glimpse of the big fella on camera but end up embarking on an unforgettable adventure.

Fans of festive trivia might be interested to know that The Christmas Chronicles was directed by Chris Columbus, who also produced Home Alone, which may go so way to explain why it's such a Christmas smash hit.

Speaking ahead of the film's release, Columbus said: "Kurt is the definitive Santa Claus. Charismatic, tough when needed, with a wicked sense of humour. We're really excited for audiences to see his performance onscreen and hope The Christmas Chronicles becomes a timeless classic."

Meanwhile, Director Clay Kaytis added: "No one is better suited than Kurt Russell to bring our version of a rugged, charismatic and hilarious Santa Claus to life.

"From our first meeting, he completely threw himself into this iconic role - and grew an impressive beard in the process. It has been a dream come true to work with Kurt in creating what I believe will be the new definition of Santa Claus for generations to come."

The film is getting positive reviews from viewers on social media, while earning itself a respectable 7.4 on IMDB.
