The Emoji Movie, featuring Sir Patrick Stewart and James Corden, has cleaned up at this year's Razzie Awards.

The Golden Raspberry Awards, better known as the Razzies, have celebrated the worst of cinema for the past 38 years, and are seen as a light-hearted antidote to the pomp and ceremony of the Oscars.

The Emoji Movie took home four awards including Worst Picture. It was up against similarly poor fare including the Baywatch remake, confused sex film Fifty Shades Darker, The Mummy (remake) and Transformers: The Last Knight.

The Emoji Movie also won the award for Worst Director (harsh given that it's an animation), Worst Screenplay and Worst Screen Combo for 'any two obnoxious emojis'.

It's a scathing broadside for the movie, which was meant to tap into the soaring popularity of emojis in today's world, but fell flat with critics, garnering a nine percent Rotten Tomatoes score. It fared better at the box office, however, grossing over $200 million dollars.

Other winners at the 38th annual Razzie show were Fifty Shades Darker for Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off or Sequel, while Kim Basinger won Worst Supporting Actress for her role in the film. Worst Supporting Actor went to Mel Gibson, while pint-sized Scientology doyen Tom Cruise took home a golden raspberry for his role as Nick Morton in the unnecessary return of The Mummy.

Tyler Perry, a man, won Worst Actress for dressing up as a woman to play Mabel 'Madea' Simmons in Boo 2! A Madea Halloween.

The makers of Transformers: The Last Knight will be disappointed/relieved after taking home no awards after ten nominations, while The Emoji Movie lost only one out of the five categories in which it was nominated.

The Emoji Movie followed the story of Gene, an emoji living in the digital world of Textopolis. His adventures saw him visit a piracy app, Candy Crush, Instagram, Dropbox, Spotify and other digital worlds, but the zeitgeisty premise didn't pass muster with critics.

Glen Kelly of The New York Times called it 'nakedly idiotic' while The Guardian's Charles Bramesco went a step further, labelling it 'insidious evil'. Many critics accused the film of being little more than an advertising exercise for companies profiting from downloads.

It also featured Sir Patrick Stewart as a turd emoji, which must have seemed like a good idea to someone at the time.

Despite the bad rep a Razzie can give to films and actors, some of Hollywood's finest have won them along with their more desirable accolades. Kevin Costner has won one too.

In 2010, Sandra Bullock won a worst actress Razzie for All About Steve and even turned up to collect her award. Taking it in her stride, the blow was further softened the following evening, when she won a best actress Oscar for The Blindside.
