The Christmas special of Gavin and Stacey has started filming in Wales.

The BBC's Bafta-winning sitcom that tells the story of a young couple - a man from Essex and a girl from South Wales - last graced screens in the UK back in 2010.

Now, it is slated to return over the festive period for a one-off special. The decision to bring the show back was announced in May by James Corden.

Corden shared the news on Twitter, confirming that he will reprise his role as Smithy, with Matthew Horne and Joanna Page to return as the titular characters.

Of course, Rob Brydon will be back as Uncle Bryn, too.

This Friday, Christmas decorations were seen on a house in the South Wales town of Barry, which is where Stacey hails from on the show. Locals spotted the unseasonable decorations and couldn't be happier that the show is returning to the area.

Local café owner Marco Zaeraschi told the BBC: "I could've done cartwheels on the promenade when I heard [the show was coming back].

"It's just brought a buzz back to the town. Gavin and Stacey put Barry back on the map and has done wonders for Barry Island as well.

"It will be interesting to see Christmas trees, decorations and Christmas lights in the middle of July."

The new episode will be written by Ruth Jones and Corden. When it was announced, a press release from the pair read: "Over the last ten years we've talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey - where they might be today and what their lives might look like.

"And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one-hour special. We've loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy.

"We're so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen."

He added: "And try not being able to let this little secret out of the bag since smiffie called from LA about two months ago ... I'm going to get a lot of grief from some very dear friends!!! But anyway....."
