In the 25 years he has been waiting, there must have been a time when Martin Scorsese gave up hope of ever seeing the dramatic story line of Silence unfold onto the big screen.

Well, patience is a virtue and good things come to those who wait. Silence, written by Japanese author Shusaku Endo, is set for an awards-qualifying release. On December 23, the film will be released to limited theatres before expanding onto others in January, reports Hitfix.

The story, which had an estimated budget for $51,000,000 (£39.4m), is set in 17th century Japan where outsiders and Christians were not trusted and considered unworthy. It follows two Jesuit priests who are played by Adam Driver and Andrew Garfield - Spider-man isn't rumoured to make an appearance.

The characters set out on a quest and travel to Japan to find their mentor, played by Liam Neeson, but are persecuted when on a missionary trip.

Apparently, filming wrapped last year and, until now, the anticipated release date has been a closely guarded secret.

For Scorsese, who has wanted to adapt the novel onto the big screen since 1991, it's a rather exciting time. So let's hope it's worth the wait.
