The Release Date For American Horror Story: 1984 Has Been Announced

US TV network FX has announced the US release date and time for the next series of American Horror Story.

American Horror Story: 1984 will premiere on FX on 18 September 2019 at 10pm. There's no word yet about a UK release date, but you'd imagine it will be very similar.

This latest instalment of the massively popular horror anthology show will be the ninth with super-producer Ryan Murphy at the helm.

While details about cast and plot are pretty thin on the ground - we know Emma Roberts is in it, but that's about it - we can presumably expect a lot of tribute to be paid to the great 1980s tradition of slasher/horror movies.

Think A Nightmare on Elm Street or Friday the 13th but brought forward into 2019.

Excited? You should be.

Scared? Well, given previous seasons you should probably feel that too.

As well as Emma Roberts, we know for sure that Olympic silver medallist turned actor Gus Kenworthy (not many of those out there) is also going to be in this latest outing.

The freestyle skier - who came second in the slopestyle at the Sochi Winter Olympics, since you've asked - teased the new series with a picture of the script that just said: "Monday".

That was earlier this month, and now we have a release date. Things happen quickly on American Horror Story, it would seem.

While that doesn't reveal anything - and I mean anything - about what is going to happen, we did get some more inconclusive quotes out of executive producer Tim Minear.

FX

Minear said that the upcoming season would be a 'treat' for fans of 1980s horror movies. Well, duh.

He said: "I will tell you nothing, except that I think it's awesome.

"I think it's gonna be really scary but a lot of fun, like it always is. And that if you have a taste for '80s horror, you're in for a treat."

He added: "Generally, Ryan [Murphy] is ahead of the zeitgeist as opposed to following it,

"So what I would say is that this has been an area that Ryan has talked about since I've known him and it's just a real sweet spot for him. And I think it was time for him to do it."

However, with every new beginning comes a few endings. We also know that longstanding AHS actor Evan Peters won't be back this time out.

That's not entirely surprising given that he's spoken about the emotional weight of the characters he's asked to play on the show.

FX

In an interview with GQ, Peters said: "It's just exhausting.

"It's really mentally draining, and you don't want to go to those places ever in your life. And so you have to go there for the scenes, and it ends up integrating it somehow into your life.

"You're in traffic and you find yourself screaming and you're like, 'What the hell? This isn't who I am.'"

Well, for those of us who do want to go there again, we now know how long we'll have to wait.
