It's time for the princess to save the prince, as the first trailer for the upcoming live-action adaptation of Mulan has finally dropped - and it looks pretty damn spectacular.

Looking every bit the IRL version of the animated classic we'd hoped for, the film is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan and follows the titular character as she goes from a young maiden to one of China's greatest heroines while trying to save her father from death in the army.

With the help of a few friends, she helps fight off an invasion, all the while falling in love along the way.

This marks yet another cinematic achievement in the House of Mouse's live-action canon, joining the likes of Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Dumbo, The Lion King, and upcoming films including The Lady and the Tramp and Cruella.

As you'll see in the trailer, actress Liu Yifei will star as the movie's heroine, having made a name for herself in films such as The Forbidden Kingdom and Outcast.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story star Donnie Yen will join her as mentor and teacher Commander Tung, along with Ghost Bride star Yoson An as Chen Honghui, who is replacing Mulan's love interest Li Shang from the original film.

The remake will divert from the original with its villains too, with Gong Li to star as Xian Lang, a powerful witch and key antagonist, as well as vengeful warrior Bori Khan played by Soldier star Jason Scott Lee.

Mulan's father Hua Zhou is to be portrayed by Tzi Ma of Rush Hour fame, while her sister Hua Xiu will be played by Dead Lucky star Xana Tang.

And last but by no means least, Hollywood heavyweight Jet Li is to make an appearance as the Emperor of China.

Curse of the Golden Flower/Edko Film

It's a strong cast, one that's made even more exciting by the fact that Disney is choosing to deviate from the animated original.

Speaking about what to expect from the film and, more specifically, her character, Gong said: "I've never played a villain but with this role - audiences will feel she's a villain in the beginning but toward the end, they'll see why.

"There was no witch in the original, there was a man but he wasn't that important. [Xian Lang] will become important in this movie... audiences will understand why this character is the way she is, what she wants - they've handled the character very well."

Looks like Mulan is set for success when it finally drops next year. Until then, we've got The Lion King to keep those nostalgia levels up.
