The trailer for Joker has finally dropped - and it looks seriously dark.

The long-awaited film tells the origin story of the iconic comic book villain, the Joker, and sees Hollywood icon Joaquin Phoenix take on the title role.

Apart from a few leaked clips of filming, this is the first time we have seen Phoenix properly as the clown and he looks hella creepy.

Panning across the Gotham City skyline, fans are finally introduced to Arthur Fleck, a struggling comedian who makes his money dressed as a clown, holding up signs on the side-walk.

But unlike many other depictions of the clown, this follows his descent from doting son to criminal, as we seem him beaten by thugs before saying: "Is it me or are things getting crazier out there?"

Bit by bit, Fleck seems to be losing control. The final shot is of the Fleck, now in full Joker mode, stepping into an elevator and giving a menacing grin as the doors slide shut. Chilling.

And by the looks of the comments, DC fans seem pretty impressed with that they have seen.

One person wrote on Twitter: "Intriguing, I want to see it. Joaquin Phoenix has the acting chops to pull this off."

A second fan said: "#JokerMovie looks absolutely incredible."

"Ohhhh yes this looks amazing already," echoed another.

Some fans pointed out how it looks different to previous incarnations of the character, with the most iconic being the late Heath Ledger, who played the villain in 2008's Dark Knight.

Referencing his performance, one fan was still confident it would do the character justice, writing: "While a fourth person added: "This movie has me freaking. So dark so gritty so unreal."

Not easy to do justice to the character after Jack and Heath Ledger but this looks promising.

Since it was announced the film was being made, not much has been revealed regarding the plot, with director Todd Philips (The Hangover) and the cast have kept heir cards pretty close to their chest.

Even speaking at Cinema Con, where the trailer was given its first showing, Philips still wasn't willing to give anything away.

He said: "That's what happens when you set out to make an origin story about a character who doesn't have an origin."

When asked what genre the movie fits into, he simply said: "It's a tragedy."

As well as Joaquin Phoenix, the movie will also star Robert De Niro, who plays a talk show host and Deadpool 2's Zazie Beetz, as Joker's love interest.

Joker is set to hit cinemas on 4 October.
