Robert Downey Jr. And Jude Law's Third Sherlock Holmes Film Pushed To 2021

If you're a glass half full kind of person, then you'll be pleased to hear that Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law will be returning in a third Sherlock Holmes film in 2021.

However, if you're more of a glass half empty kind of person, then you'll probably have clocked that the news here is that the film has been pushed back.

The third instalment was originally due to be released this year, 10 years on from the first simply-named film, Sherlock Holmes. But this release date was subsequently pushed back to 2020 and now it's been pushed back again to 2021... December 2021.

So if you had no idea the film was happening at all then I suppose you'll be pleased to read this, whereas you'll probably be a little miffed if this is the second time your fix of Law and Downey Jr. has been postponed... Ignorance is bliss, as they say.

But to be fair, Warner Bros and Village Roadshow Pictures didn't really have a choice but to delay it, given that the film hasn't yet begun shooting.

What's more, there isn't a director at the helm as of yet, which is a bit of an issue.

That's even more of a concern if you're a fan of Guy Ritchie, as he presided over the first two films and doesn't seem to be attached to complete the trilogy as of yet.

The first two films collectively pulled in more than a $1 billion at the box office, so you think that'd be quite a big incentive to get the third film wrapped up. Yet, the more the film is pushed back, the more people will become fearful that the project will get ditched all together.

But fans of the detective duo should take some comfort from the knowledge that Narcos co-creator, Chris Brancato, is reportedly working on the script for the final film.

In the sequel, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, fans were left to believe (if they were naive) that Holmes had plunged to his death after hurling himself at Professor James Moriarty to protect his sidekick. However, in a cheeky twist at the end, Watson received a package containing a breathing device that revealed Holmes survived the fall into the Reichenbach Falls... Like Holmes can be defeated.

Is it the end?

Downey Jr's character then hopped on Watson's typewriter and added a question mark after the words 'The End'... A question mark that still looms large, eight years on.
